I didn’t set out to be a pastor. I set out to be a businessman. I still find it ironic that God could so radically alter my life’s course. In brief, what happened is that God revealed my heart to me, something that I had largely ignored in pursuit of goals. I discovered that I was far more passionate about a small Bible study that I was leading where people were hungry for God, than I was my job. I also discovered new desires; a voracious desire to read – stories, Scripture, theology . When God essentially showed me who I was, only then did I look and listen for what Jesus was wanting to do with my life. A verse from the psalms still stands out to me today: “If the Lord delights in a man’s ways, he will make his steps firm. Though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.” Psalm 37:24
I have been a pastor for twelve years now – three as a solo pastor in a small church in rural Ontario, Canada where the winters never ended, five as an associate pastor in San Diego, California where the winters never began, and four in Tacoma, Washington, where the rain never stops. Wherever God has sent me, I love being a part of what He is doing in drawing people to himself.
My beautiful wife Malaika and I have two energetic young daughters, Madeline and Chloe, and one rambunctious orange dog, Macie. I used to say that I loved “anything outdoors, intense and active” and that is still the case, with longboard surfing, motorcycling, running and swimming. Though today I can wholeheartedly say that I have a more contemplative side too with a love for fiction, music and film and grasping what they are saying about God, what it means to be human, and what is truly important.
